A pilot project involving Royal Surrey staff has won a prestigious industry award from the Health Service Journal.

The award, in the category ‘Most Effective Contribution to Clinical Redesign’ was received in recognition of a ‘Targeted Prostate Health Check’ initiative the new triage service which was launched as a pilot in August last year to identify and treat prostate cancer patients. The project was led by our great friends at the Surrey and Sussex Cancer Alliance, in partnership with virtual hospital provider, Medefer. And they were awarded a High Commendation in the category Most Effective Contribution to Improving Cancer Outcomes.

At the award ceremony last night in London, the partnership won the Most Effective Contribution to Clinical Redesign for the new triage service which was launched as a pilot in August last year. And they were awarded a High Commendation in the category Most Effective Contribution to Improving Cancer Outcomes.

The project used GP records to identify males with risk factors for prostate cancer based on age, ethnicity, and family history.  Around 1,550 men were then invited by text message to enrol in the prostate assessment programme and those eligible were then invited for a PSA test and a urine test at local community clinics.

Those with a raised PSA level were then referred directly for treatment at Royal Surrey.

As you will see from the image, a number of familiar faces were involved in the win, including our very own Professor Stephen Langley, who said ‘“We are absolutely delighted to have won this award which celebrates and recognises the hard work and commitment of everyone involved to bring about a pathway change to improve outcomes for patients.

This recognition will bring significant endorsement to the Targeted Prostate Health Check as it is expanded across the alliance footprint.”
